At TPMG, our people are central to every project we deliver. With ambitious growth plans and a strong focus on sustainability, we’re proud to support the next generation of engineers as they build their careers. This month, we’re introducing Natalie Friel, who joined us as a Graduate Engineer and is already making her mark across a wide variety of projects.
Can you introduce yourself and share what your role at TPMG involves day-to-day?
My name is Natalie Friel, and I currently hold the role of a Graduate Engineer at TPMG. So far, I have been involved in the bidding process, using economic models in order to best estimate prices for a large variety of jobs. I have also been involved in the design and fabrication process, reviewing specifications and isometrics for piping within the projects that proceeded past the bidding stage. Once a project has commenced, the effective management of the resources available within the company is also a vital part of the process.
What excites you most about working here?
As a recent graduate, the hands-on experience of working with TPMG has been incredibly valuable for my professional development. With the fabrication shop just a short walk away, I have been able to be involved throughout the entire project delivery process. Moreover, being surrounded by experienced professionals who are open to collaboration and mentorship has been incredibly motivating. There is a huge emphasis on continuous improvement and practical learning here, which makes every day feel like a meaningful step forward in my career.
Sustainability is a core focus at TPMG – how does this influence the work you do, and why is it important to you personally and professionally?
Sustainability plays a huge role in how we approach work at TPMG, which I am being exposed to even in these early stages of my career. From looking to minimise the waste of energy and materials within our operations to understanding how small technical decisions can have a large environmental impact.
Personally, sustainability is something I care deeply about. Coming from a chemical engineering background, I’ve seen the huge potential for greener solutions within the chemical production industry, as well as the challenges they come along with. I believe that it is crucial for engineers to take responsibility in shaping a more sustainable future, and working with TPMG has allowed me to practice this within my work.
Looking ahead, what projects or skills are you most excited to develop at TPMG over the next year?
Over the next year, I’m especially looking forward to developing my hands-on technical skills, whether that’s working with piping for processes I am not yet familiar with, refining my understanding of materials science, or contributing to process optimisation projects.
I’m also excited about gaining experience in cross-functional teams and better understanding the commercial and environmental implications of engineering decisions. I hope to be involved in sustainability-driven projects that focus on reducing carbon emissions or increasing circularity in manufacturing, which align with both my professional goals and TPMG’s values.
Outside of work, what hobbies or passions do you have?
Outside of work, I really enjoy staying active when I can. I love taking my family’s dogs out for nature walks and exploring new places around Scotland. I’m passionate about cooking, and I love learning new recipes from all over the world. I also play piano, which I find is a great way to unwind after work, while still feeling like I’m developing my skills, even if they’re in a different context.
